As their children finished university, Randy and Carolyn came to Serge in 2012, to offer themselves to advance the kingdom of Jesus Christ in Africa. Randy and Carolyn had long loved Serge and its emphasis on gospel transformation and ministering from weakness. Randy had served on the board of directors of Serge from 2005-2011. His past experience in US academic medicine and with international projects, hers with inner city schools in the US and their work Kenya in 1985-6 and in Malawi in 2012 helped prepare them. In early 2014, after language school, Randy began serving as Dean of the School of Medicine at Hope Africa University (HAU) in Burundi and providing pediatric care. Carolyn taught English at the university and acted as hostess to more than 400 guests per year --from the Serge team in Kibuye and those overnighting in transit between flights and the Serge team in Kibuye.

When COVID hit in 2020, they were in a language update period in France. After returning to the US for some additional training they learned of minor health issues would prevent a full time return to Burundi.

Adapting to the news, they have settled in Seattle from where Randy continues to offer remote support to the new dean, travel to teach and provide pediatric care at Kibuye, encourage Serge teams who provide medical education, raise awareness of Serge’s medical work and find support for Hope Africa University students and graduates pursuing residency education.
