Charles and Sarah Kaye

Charles and Sarah Kaye

The Kaye family moved to Granada, Nicaragua in 2006, where Charles and Sarah serve as team leaders for Serge. Their work is based around the El Puente mission base and the Granada Christian Education Center. Their two children Banks ('97) and Willa ('99) call Granada their second home, while currently attending high school in Virginia.

Charles grew up outside of Boston, Mass., and Sarah in Rochester, Minn. Charles prepared for a career in business at Harvard and later the Wharton Business School, while Sarah graduated from the University of Virginia, and went on to become a Chartered Financial Analyst. They met while working in the financial services industry in New York, and were married through Redeemer Presbyterian Church in 1996, which was their central community for several years. With the arrival of their second child, they decided to leave New York City and moved to rural Virginia outside of Charlottesville, where Charles began a hedge fund and Sarah focused on bringing back to life an historic farm and raising children.

Challenged to walk out their faith in a new way, Charles and Sarah began exploring what mission work might look like through a series of trips to Central America over a period of three years, finally deciding to focus on Granada, which had seen very few successful mission entrants over the years.

They established the El Puente mission base at the crossroads of five barrios at the edge of the historic district, in the heart of drug territory. El Puente now hosts a bi-lingual church, Vida Joven youth clubs, post-recovery addiction support groups, an economic development initiative making and marketing jewelry and handcrafts and many visiting mission teams throughout the year.

In addition, they have founded a new bi-lingual Christian school in Pantanal, a poor but growing barrio, on the outskirts of town. With both children moving back to Virginia for their high school years, Charles and Sarah face the challenges of educating teenage children in the U.S. while managing the programs in Granada and building out the school over the next several years.
