Eighty percent of all blindness is either reversible or preventable in Burundi.

That is why we are planning a massive expansion for our eye clinic —
  • to increase patient capacity
  • to increase training opportunities
  • — so that this great need can continue to be addressed in the future.

Giving the gift of sight to the blind is consistently found to be one of the most cost-effective interventions in all of medicine.

A gift as small as $20 can restore someone’s vision.
A gift of $3.5 million can help build an eye center that will care for a referral population of 15 million people (Burundi, Eastern Congo, Western Tanzania), train tomorrow’s leaders and advance much needed research in Africa.

When Dr. Cropsey came to Burundi in 2013 he was the only eye surgeon located outside the capital city. Today the clinic is on track to provide care for 15,000 ophthalmology outpatients and perform 1,500 eye surgeries in 2019 — while simultaneously training medical students, technicians and rotating residents and fellows.

But this is only a small fraction of the need in the region. Dr. Cropsey says, “Over the coming 10 years we need to multiply our clinical capacity by 10 fold!”

Hope Africa University's main teaching hospital, Kibuye Hope Hospital where Dr. Cropsey serves, is poised to become the leading center of eye care and training for the Great Lakes Region of Africa. The high quality of the medical team serving at KHH attracts the best and brightest to study under them — and then join them in making this clinic a genuine place of hope for Africa.

Goals of the Expansion Project:

Our goal is to eliminate needless blindness in the Great Lakes Region of Africa as we serve as the caring hands of Jesus. We want to do that by treating the sick with skill and compassion, building physical infrastructure, and developing human resources. The specific goals of this project are as follows:

  • 1) Build a 35,000 sq. ft. international eye referral center at Kibuye Hope Hospital with the capacity to serve 100,000 outpatients and perform 10,000 surgeries per year

  • 2) Establish satellite clinics in the region that will provide basic eye care services and refer specialized cases to the Kibuye

  • 3) Develop the human resources needed to staff and oversee the referral center and eye care network

  • Quality drives development. An international center of excellence that can treat all spectrums of eye disease, train high-quality eye care providers and research the most pressing matters in this context will create confidence in eye care services. This will be the engine for the rapid development of eye care in the region.
